Mississippi Palisades & Apple River Canyon State Parks

Located along the Mississippi River near Savanna, Mississippi Palisades State Park is famous for its towering limestone bluffs, wooded ravines, and panoramic river views.

Fishing

The Mississippi River offers excellent fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, walleye, and northern pike. Its lovely backdrop and peaceful environment make the park ideal for anglers who want to spend a few hours—or even the whole day—looking for that perfect catch.

With plenty of good fishing spots, shoreline access points, and public boat launches, Mississippi Palisades State Park makes it easy to spend a day on the water.

Note: Illinois fishing licenses are required for eligible anglers, and all state regulations, seasons, and daily creel limits apply.

Hunting

The state park is also a great place to participate in seasonal hunting opportunities. Limited hunting is available in designated areas throughout the state’s hunting seasons. Depending on the time of year, hunters may pursue white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrels, rabbits, and select game species.

Hiking

With lovely scenery, changing seasonal foliage, peaceful streams, and a refreshing atmosphere, it’s no wonder that hiking is one of the most popular things to do in Mississippi Palisades State Park. Some of our favorite trails include:

Sentinel Trail – 1 mile | Moderate. This scenic out-and-back trail climbs through wooded terrain to one of the park's most spectacular overlooks of the Mississippi River. Spring wildflowers and colorful fall foliage make it especially rewarding during those seasons.
Indian Head Trail – 1 mile | Moderate to Difficult. Featuring rocky terrain and several elevation changes, this trail leads hikers to dramatic bluff-top viewpoints overlooking the river valley. It's a favorite for photographers year-round.
Twin Sisters Trail – 0.5 mile | Moderate. A short but scenic hike leading to the park's unique Twin Sisters rock formations. The trail is ideal for visitors looking for impressive scenery without a lengthy hike.
Oak Point Trail – 2 miles | Moderate. This wooded trail meanders through a mature forest before reaching scenic overlooks of the Mississippi River. Fall is an especially beautiful time to hike thanks to the vibrant autumn colors.

Picnicking and Fun

For those who want to spend a more leisurely day at the state park, picnic tables and shelters are located throughout the area, with many overlooking the river. Wildlife viewing, photography, birdwatching, and scenic drives are popular family activities, especially during eagle-watching season!

Just east of Galena, Apple River Canyon State Park features scenic woodlands, limestone bluffs, and the winding Apple River.

Fishing

Apple River Canyon State Park is another ideal fishing destination, where anglers can find smallmouth bass, rock bass, channel catfish, sunfish, and other panfish from several shoreline access points. Quiet spots, serene surroundings, and plenty of opportunities for a great catch bring fishermen and women from all over the state.

Hunting

Designated portions of Apple River Canyon State Park allow seasonal hunting for species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrels, and rabbits. Though hunting may not be the biggest draw to the park, it’s still a worthwhile activity for those who enjoy a day outdoors.

Hiking

Experience the beauty of Apple River Canyon State Park by following one of these popular hiking trails:

Tower Rock Trail – 1.5 miles | Moderate. This out-and-back trail winds through peaceful hardwood forests before reaching impressive limestone bluffs and rock formations. Spring and fall offer comfortable hiking temperatures and beautiful scenery.
River Trail – 1 mile | Easy. Following portions of the Apple River, this gentle trail provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the sounds of the flowing water. It's a great option for families.
Canyon Loop Trail – 2 miles | Moderate. This scenic loop showcases the park's wooded hillsides, limestone bluffs, and river valley while offering a good introduction to the area's unique geology. Fall colors make this one of the park's most popular hikes.
Woodland Nature Trail – 0.75 mile | Easy. A relaxing walk through shaded forests featuring seasonal wildflowers, native trees, and occasional wildlife sightings. This trail is especially enjoyable during spring and early summer.
