Fall in Galena Beyond the Crowds

There’s a reason fall is one of the most popular times to visit Galena. The hills turn shades of red, orange and gold. The air gets crisp enough for a sweater. Main Street looks particularly handsome dressed for the season. And somehow, sitting down with a glass of wine or lingering over a good dinner feels even better when there’s a chill outside.

There’s just one catch: everyone else has heard about fall in Galena, too.

If your idea of a getaway involves a little more wandering and a little less waiting, there’s another way to experience autumn here. Come during the week. Stay a little later in the season. Venture beyond Main Street. You’ll still get everything that makes fall in Galena special, but with a bit more room to actually enjoy it.

Here’s how we’d do it.

Trade the Weekend Rush for a Midweek Escape

We love a lively Main Street, but there's something particularly lovely about Galena from Sunday through Thursday.

The sidewalks are quieter. Getting a table at dinner can be easier. You can linger in the shops instead of navigating a Saturday afternoon crowd. And once evening arrives, you get to see another side of Galena: softly lit historic buildings, quiet streets and plenty of places to settle in for dinner or a drink.

Don't assume that visiting during the week means finding Galena closed. Restaurants, shops, attractions and outdoor destinations remain open throughout the week, although individual hours vary by business.

Our advice? Steal a couple of vacation days and let everyone else have Saturday.

See the Fall Color Away from Main Street

Historic Main Street gets most of the photographs, but some of Galena's best autumn scenery is found when you leave downtown behind.

Horseshoe Mound Preserve is one of our favorite places to send guests. Just outside Galena, its trails climb through restored prairie and oak savanna to expansive views across the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see into three states. In autumn, you get rolling hills covered in color instead.

For a longer outing, Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve combines wooded trails, Mississippi River views and significant Native American archaeological features. It's beautiful any time of year, but particularly atmospheric on a crisp fall morning.

You don't necessarily need hiking boots, either. Stagecoach Trail makes a wonderful fall drive through the countryside north and east of Galena, passing farms, wooded ridges and small towns along a route with roots stretching back to the 1830s.

Pack a jacket. Grab a coffee. Take the long way.

Have a Glass of Wine Where the Grapes Actually Grow

You can taste local wine without leaving downtown Galena, but on a beautiful fall afternoon we'd suggest heading into the countryside.

At Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery, you can sip wine overlooking the vineyard from the property's wraparound porch and grounds. Fall also happens to coincide with harvest season, making it an especially fitting time to visit.

Drive a little farther and you'll find Massbach Ridge Winery, surrounded by the rolling farmland of Jo Daviess County. Or make an afternoon of exploring the countryside and visit Fergedaboudit Vineyard & Winery near Hanover.

The drive is part of the experience. This corner of Illinois sits in the Driftless Region, where the landscape rolls and folds in a way that surprises people expecting pancake-flat Midwestern scenery.

Just remember to decide who gets to enjoy the tastings and who gets to enjoy being the designated driver.

Take Your Lunch Outside While You Still Can

Fall patio season in Galena is a gift with an expiration date.

Those sunny afternoons when the temperature hovers somewhere between perfect sweater weather and maybe we don't need the sweater after all are ideal for stretching lunch into something considerably less productive.

There are outdoor dining options throughout Galena Country, from vineyard patios to decks and tucked-away garden spaces. If the weather cooperates, take advantage of it. There will be plenty of time for eating indoors once winter arrives.

And if the afternoon happens to involve wine, cheese and absolutely nowhere else you need to be, we consider that a perfectly respectable itinerary.

Walk or Bike the Galena River Trail

If you'd rather earn your dinner, head for the Galena River Trail.

The trail follows the Galena River south from town and offers an easy way to get outside without devoting an entire day to an expedition. Walk a section, bring your bikes, or simply use it as an excuse to stretch your legs after breakfast.

It's particularly pretty in autumn, when the landscape along the river begins changing color. And because the trail is accessible year-round, it remains an option even after the biggest fall weekends have passed.

Don't Write Off November

Here's one of our favorite Galena secrets: fall doesn't suddenly disappear when October ends.

By November, the peak foliage crowds have largely gone home, but Galena hasn't. The historic buildings are still here. The restaurants are still cooking. The wine is still pouring. The trails are still open.

And the town begins making its transition toward the holidays.

If your priority is brilliant foliage, October is difficult to beat. But if you're looking for a romantic getaway with crisp weather, good food, historic surroundings and fewer people between you and all of the above, early November deserves serious consideration.

Sometimes the best time to visit a place is just after everyone tells you the best time to visit.

Leave Some Time for Doing Absolutely Nothing

This is the part people tend to leave off their Galena itineraries.

Don't schedule every hour.

One of the pleasures of staying at a bed and breakfast is having somewhere you actually want to return to between adventures. At High Street Inn, we're just a few blocks uphill from Main Street, but our residential setting feels surprisingly removed from downtown once you're back at the house.

Take a book into one of the parlors. Play a game. Wander through the gardens. Sit in the gazebo and watch the light change across the countryside. Or simply head upstairs and take a nap.

In the morning, we'll have breakfast waiting.

Our Ideal Quieter Fall Day in Galena

If you asked us to plan the day, we'd keep it simple.

Start with breakfast at the Inn, then head to Horseshoe Mound while the morning is still cool. From there, take a leisurely drive through the countryside and spend part of the afternoon at a local vineyard. Return to High Street for a little downtime before walking the few blocks downhill to Main Street for dinner.

Afterward, wander through downtown once the day-trippers have departed, then make your way home.

Yes, the walk back is uphill.

We prefer to think of it as earning tomorrow's breakfast.

Plan Your Fall Getaway to Galena

Fall in Galena doesn't have to mean chasing peak-color weekends or squeezing everything into two crowded days.

Come during the week. Stay an extra night. Explore beyond downtown. Follow a road simply because it looks interesting. Order another glass of wine. Give yourself permission to spend an afternoon doing very little at all.
